American Apparel · Story 02 / 08
What if the next chapter starts with a blank?
An iconic tee. A new role.
A canvas for somebody else’s ideas.
American Apparel had been a cultural statement. The opportunity was to give creators a starting point for statements of their own.
The campaign film brings the tee into the worlds of the people who print it, wear it and make it their own.
01 / The opportunity
A familiar name.
A different kind of relevance.
The next chapter needed a fresh reason to choose American Apparel. The opportunity was in the creators’ market: people looking for the right blank to carry a design, a message or a brand of their own.
For that audience, a T-shirt is both a style choice and a material to work with. The campaign needed to connect product quality with creative possibility.
As Creative Director at Studio Five, I gave the 2001 tee a clear role in that story, with the creator at its centre.

The question behind the work
What can a blank
make possible?
A label. A community. An independent business.
An idea that deserves to be seen.
02 / The creative platform
The 2001 & Only.
Made for originality.
The product number became a statement. A bold, recognisable campaign line held the work together, while different people, prints and processes gave it room to move.

Short edits follow the work of making a blank personal. Printing, styling and conversations with the people choosing the product give the campaign a wider set of stories.
The making process puts the product’s creative potential in view.
From a printing press to an individual point of view.
Colour, print and expressive typography carry the campaign into a shorter format.
The product in conversation with the people who work with it.
Fit, feel and durability come into focus through conversations with the trade.

How the brand travels
From a brand you wear
to a brand you build with.
Here, the journey was into a new relationship with the audience. A familiar product became the starting point for other people’s ideas, identities and ambitions.
The work connected American Apparel’s recognisable character with a clear role in the creators’ market: a blank with somewhere new to go.
